movingGROUND TECHNIQUE CLASS
a post-modern movement training

This movement class focuses on moving from the core body; using release techniques/floor work, yoga, core work, and contact improvisation; creating connectivity from the core through the limbs; releasing into and out of the ground; expanding the edges of one's movement capacity. Class begins with core-warming, and floor movement, followed by upright, upside down and phrase work. We will work in both athletic and gentle formats. Each student is encouraged to work at her/his movement ability level, while being willing to take risks.

movingGROUND CHOREOGRAPHY LAB
Traditional and non-traditional approaches to choreography are investigated.
We begin with such traditional choreographic conventions as A-B-A, and move to more post-modern ideas of working, using emotion/ image/ story as source material for choreographic inspiration. Students are also introduced to the principles of Body-Mind Centering®, as an approach to creating choreography, using the body systems and states work as source. All forms of composition are viewed as equally valid. Students will be encouraged to experiment and engage with each format and resource and the classroom will be observed as a laboratory where students can push toward whatever edge of choreographic/compositional experience feels most radical from their own knowledge base. Time will be allowed for students to share constructive feedback with one another, as guided by the instructor.
This class/workshop can be taught to any level of performer/dancer/ student.

RADIATE
contact improvisation class

Moving from center, radiating out through all extending limbs. Initiating from any peripheral end-point. Spiraling in all directions, from all directions.
Partnering begins with our relationship to the ground. Pouring our weight into, suspending and extending up and out of, pushing and pulling - we first learn how to use the supporting surface of the ground underneath us; the ground becomes another body; we explore our initiation and follow-through of movement in and out of the ground, through space, and then in contact with another body. Now, in partnership, we are offered more opportunities for oppositional relationship to gravity, release, suspension, and flight.

SPIRAL BONES YOGA
This class focuses on a flowing asana practice, with special attention to anatomical specificity, alignment and breath. We will work at different paces throughout the class, first building heat in the body and then slowly unfolding progressions of asana postures. We will maintain attention to detail, while remaining open to exploration, and improvisation throughout the class, staying alive and alert in the practice.
